YAB Onn Hafiz: Leverage on OGSE Blueprint to get a leg up in energy transition
JOHOR BAHRU, 23 May 2023 – Johor oil & gas services and equipment (OGSE) companies should leverage on initiatives from the National OGSE Industry Blueprint 2021-2030 (OGSE Blueprint) to aid them in successfully navigating the energy transition, said Menteri Besar YAB Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by Yang Berhormat Tuan Mohd Hairi Bin Mad Shah, Johor State Executive Council and Chairman of Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur, Cooperatives and Human Resources, Onn Hafiz said while Johor OGSE companies had performed commendably in the OGSE space to date, the industry must be cognisant of the oil & gas industry’s current trajectory towards the energy transition in response to climate change.
“Amid this landscape, the industry and its support services must seek new ways to produce and use energy with a focus on cleaner and renewable energy. This, in turn, opens up huge potential for OGSE companies to explore new areas of business growth while leveraging on their existing expertise in oil & gas,” he said.
Onn Hafiz’s speech was delivered at the Johor OGSE Roadshow 2023 here today. Themed “Unlocking Opportunities in the Energy Transition”, the event was organised by the Ministry of Economy’s Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC), with the support of the Johor State Government.
MPRC President/CEO Mohd Yazid Ja’afar said, “The Johor OGSE Roadshow circles back to the foundation of the OGSE Blueprint, as well as the key trend that the Government and oil & gas and energy industries are currently tackling: the need to shift to a low carbon future.” He also invited Johor OGSE companies to discover Government support available through the OGSE Blueprint to build up their capabilities to be relevant and succeed in a low-carbon, sustainable energy-focused future.
Mohd Yazid noted that against the backdrop of this energy transition, OGSE companies in Johor must be future-ready to support the development of the downstream oil & gas industry in Johor, thus helping to ensure the State’s continued attractiveness as an investment destination.
He added that the OGSE Blueprint also provides pathways and potential areas for collaboration for talent development and the deployment of new technologies, which make up two other areas which are key to continued socioeconomic growth and business sustainability.
He added that four Johor OGSE companies had already benefited from OGSE industry development initiatives, namely Ventiones Innovations Sdn Bhd, AEE Services Sdn Bhd, Pure Aims Technology Sdn Bhd, Optreum Sdn Bhd. The companies had secured a total of almost RM1 million from the OGSE Development Grant (OGSE DG), a 70:30 matching grant for companies to adopt technology and innovation as well as facilitate exports.
Close to 200 OGSE industry stakeholders attended the Johor OGSE Roadshow, which featured presentations and exhibitions by the Ministry of Economy, MPRC’s subsidiary Johor Petroleum Development Corporation (JPDC), PETRONAS, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Unit Peneraju Agenda Bumiputera (TERAJU) and Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad.
Attendees also participated in OGSE industry development consultation as well as business matching sessions provided by MPRC, OGSE Blueprint lead implementation partners and 13 other exhibitors including State and Federal Government agencies, financial institutions, talent development centres and industry associations.
