The construction of Marine Technology Center was completed in December 1996. Situated in the main campus of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Johor Bahru, the Center capability is tailored to become the premier Marine Technology teaching research and consultancy institution in the region. Being as one of the Center of Excellence to the university, Marine Technology Center has significant contribution to the growth of the maritime industry in Malaysia.

To conduct research and development project in various field of marine technology, the Center is equipped with international standard facility of model making and model testing.It is the only hydrodynamic center in the country and fulfill the following functions:

* Facilitate R & D work for academic staff and post-graduate students.
* Serves the Marine Technology needs of the marine industry by providing ship model testing and associated services.

The lab provide analytical services such as:

  • Measure a roughness of a sample surface at a high resolution to distinguish a sample based on its mechanical properties for example, hardness and roughness
  • Elemental composition (excluding hydrogen) and information on chemical bonding environments and oxidation states within the upper 1-10 nm of the surface.
  • Shape and size of macromolecules, characteristic distances of partially ordered materials, pore sizes, structural information of macromolecules between 5 and 25 nm.
