MPRC collaborates with French research & training firm on energy transition for Malaysian OGSE

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 MARCH 2023 – Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) and French research and training institute, IFP Energies Nouvelles (IFPEN), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore ways to elevate the capabilities of Malaysian oil & gas services and equipment (OGSE) companies amid the energy transition.
Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony and exchange here today, Mohd Yazid Ja’afar, President/CEO of MPRC said, “MPRC and IFPEN will seek opportunities to work together to support the implementation of the National OGSE Industry Blueprint 2021-2030 (OGSE Blueprint) as well as contribute to the achievement of National sustainability goals. This will cover areas including the energy transition and the decarbonisation journey; as well as human capital development in these areas.
“With this agreement that MPRC is signing with IFPEN; one of France’s foremost institutes of research and training in energy, we expect to elevate outcomes of the OGSE Blueprint by uncovering new opportunities for Malaysian OGSE companies to harness and enhance their long-term growth potential. This will strengthen OGSE companies’ resilience to tackle business imperatives even beyond the OGSE Blueprint’s 2030 finish line and safeguard their sustainability for the long-term.”
Mohd Yazid added that the MoU’s areas of focus were aligned with the Malaysian government’s policies on economic development and commitments to the low-carbon future, as well as the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
“IFPEN is keen to explore collaboration opportunities with MPRC and other Malaysian entities in support of the Government of Malaysia’s efforts to develop national energy resources and achieve the national sustainability agenda in transitioning to renewable energy and reducing carbon footprint,” said Pierre-Franck-Chevet, Chairman and CEO of IFPEN. “We are eager to
build on our existing activities in Malaysia, in particular though our subsidiaries Axens and Beicip-Franlab, and IFPEN training and education arms IFP Training and IFP School, to develop further cooperation in the field of geosciences, geothermal energy, refining and petrochemicals, sustainable fuels, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, as well as in energy competencies development and certification,” he added.
The MoU was signed by Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Suhaili Idrus, Chairman, MPRC; Mohd Yazid Ja’afar and Pierre-Franck Chevet, witnessed by Mohd Ezwan Zakaria, Vice President, MPRC and Thierry Le Maux, Chairman of the Management Board, BeicipFranlab, in the presence of YB Rafizi Ramli, Malaysia’s Minister of Economy and Virginie Bioteau, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of France, Malaysia. The agreement is valid for five years from the date of its signing.
